The Hong Kong Prize and US Senators Nominate Hong Kong Activists For the Nobel Prize

hk Prize Each year, we organize an award to celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion through art. Enrolled secondary school students can show us their creativity using any medium they prefer and represent the depth of human experiences to the world. This year we are thrilled to welcome two remarkable artists as judges of this prize!

Lawmakers of different parties have united to nominate Hong Kong’s pro-democracy activists for the Nobel Peace Prize, hailing them as global heroes despite Beijing’s crackdown on dissent. A letter signed by nine US legislators — Republican senator Marco Rubio and Democratic representative Jim McGovern among them — noted that over two million people took to the streets on 16 June for Hong Kong’s 20th anniversary since gaining independence from British rule – marking one of the biggest mass demonstrations ever seen in human history.

Hong Kong athletes medaling at the Paris Olympic will receive bonuses totalling HK$9.8 million, surpassing any other region’s total prize money pool. Foist Cheung Ka-long will take home the top award with his bonus totaling HK$6 million while epeeist Vivian Kong Man-wai and swimmer Siobhan Haaughey each will take home HK$1.5 million for winning silver medals at Paris.

This year marks the inaugural time that bounties have been used as part of the Hong Kong Prize, at a time of increasing Chinese government efforts to target dissidents; one such measure being last year’s imposition of a national security law which has been roundly criticised by Western governments and rights groups as overly restricting free speech within Hong Kong.

BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE was formed through a merger between Hong Kong Science and Technology Awards and Hong Kong Services Prize with support from Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. An organising committee will be responsible for creating rules, publicising competitions and conducting preliminary evaluations; while final judging panels in five award categories (Algorithm and Robotics; Life; Health; New Materials/New Energy/Advanced Manufacturing/FinTech) will adjudicate subsequent adjudication processes.

The operation of the Hong Kong Prize will be carried out professionally, objectively and impartially. Furthermore, high standards of social morality and professional ethics will be upheld, along with a binding code of conduct for all personnel involved in its review process. If serious violations occur, the award committee can withdraw prize money, certificates and trophies to protect the integrity of the review process. The prize logo featured both on the award website and trophies awarded to winners is an amalgamation of two precious elements: a pearl and an amulet made of jade pierced by an iron needle. It symbolizes Hong Kong’s unique values and serves as a reminder that we should uphold core values while remaining open to new ideas from around the world.
