The Sydney Prize and the Sidney Hillman Foundation

The Sydney Prize is an award that honors hard work. Not only can it be financially gratifying, but its prestige and scientific promotion serve as motivation to keep striving toward your goals – these awards may be presented both to artists as well as scientists.

The Sydney Prize is an annual literary award presented by Overland magazine. This prize honors undergraduate writing that best meets the high standards set forth by late Dartmouth professor Sidney Cox. Cox was widely respected for inspiring students to pursue their dreams; thus this prize honoring his legacy serves as an encouraging gesture from Overland magazine and Overland magazine.

In addition to literary work, the Sydney Prize recognizes social justice and activism through an annual cash award of $5,00000; runners up receive $2500. Additionally, winning authors’ works will be published in Overland magazine while those of runners ups will be published online at Overland’s website.

Established in 1946 to honor Sidney Hillman’s vision and labor leadership of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union (a predecessor to Unite Here and Workers United SEIU). Over its decades-long existence, The Hillman Foundation has striven to highlight issues impacting working Americans while searching for solutions across our nation that promote equality for all people.

Philippe Sands KC was named 2024 Sydney Prize recipient after embodying George Barrett’s public spirit and activism throughout his professional life. Philippe’s practice has focused on representing those with limited resources to defend civil rights, address colonialism legacy issues and protect the environment; his dedication has earned numerous accolades such as winning 2024 Sidney Hillman Public Interest Lawyer of the Year Award.

To enter the Sydney Prize, authors must submit a short story written under an assumed pseudonym and submit a signed copyright release form. For eligibility consideration, this story should focus on political or environmental issues not readily available elsewhere, while offering new perspectives – it can either be fiction or nonfiction submissions.
