The Xplorer Prize and the Mark Six Lottery
Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography 2024 went to a photo depicting Hong Kong riot police clearing an apartment block occupied by anti-government protesters in Hong Kong. This image caused much debate online and anger from Chinese netizens; many claimed the award’s decision had “stigmatised” China and Hong Kong police officers.
Hong Kong government announced a prize scheme designed to encourage young people to study science: the Xplorer Prize was unveiled by Pony Ma, founder and chairman of Tencent, as well as other distinguished scientists in 2018. It recognizes students with outstanding academic achievements in science while encouraging research proposals related to topics chosen by them.
Under the Prize Criteria, winning proposals should demonstrate scientific merits with potential real world impact and be creative and innovative in nature. The successful candidate will receive both a prize book and book coupon worth HK$1,000 in addition to being invited to take part in an annual summit on science and technology in Hong Kong.
This year’s award ceremony will take place in November and will consist of three award categories – Life Science, Physical Science and Mathematical and Computer Science. Awardees will receive their prizes at Hong Kong Palace Museum for the very first time.
Jimmy Lai, Chow Hang-tung, Gwyneth Ho and Joshua Wong from Hong Kong have been nominated this year for the Nobel Peace Prize for their tireless work protecting freedoms in Hong Kong and campaigning for democracy. These four have also received Yidan Prize in Education from Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts and War Child Alliance.
Mark Six lottery first prize winners must first win their division; otherwise, their prize money will be added to the jackpot and could grow beyond HK$100 million. Mable Street in North Point has reportedly been offering tickets with the highest odds of being drawn as winners of first prize.
Hong Kong boasts an enduring sports culture and athletes are widely revered for their excellence and hard work, particularly at team events of the Olympic Games. An example is seen when gold medalists receive double the prize money of individual medalists (HK$12m to gold, 6m to silver and 3m for bronze medalists respectively), with athletes who finish outside of the top three but within eight also receiving reward payments; Hong Kong will compete at Tokyo Olympics 2020.
