What is Data SGP?
Data SGP is an analysis tool that compares students’ assessment scores against academically similar ones to gain insight into their learning progress and predict future academic achievements. It requires longitudinal student assessment data as well as taking into account previous testing histories to provide more accurate results than traditional percentile scores.
Data SGP tools are an invaluable way to support instructional decisions and research initiatives, particularly with student populations that are hard to measure using traditional tests like standardized ones. The sgpdata function offers both wide format (which mimics time dependent data for use with lower level functions like studentGrowthPercentiles and studentGrowthProjections) as well as long format data sets designed to work with higher level wrapper functions like prepareSGP, summarySGP and generateSGP; long format tends to be simpler if analyses will continue over multiple years.
Formatting in either WIDE or LONG depends on several factors, including the length and frequency of analyses to be run. When considering running analyses operationally, working with LONG files has many preparation and storage advantages that might make sense.
An example of a sgpdata set is the sgptData_LONG data set, which contains anonymized longitudinal student assessment data in LONG format for 8 windows (3 windows annually across three content areas) over eight windows (3 annually across each content area). This includes all 7 necessary variables required for creating student growth and achievement plots: Valid_Case, Content_AREA, Year, ID Number, Scale Score Score Grade Grade Achievement Leve plots
