Data in Hong Kong can be found in various places, such as government departments, online platforms and private companies. Data can be used for everything from analysing economic trends to health records – some datasets may even be freely accessible while others require registration or payment before access can be granted. Luckily, the HK government offers several initiatives designed to assist businesses access and analyse this valuable resource.

Ada Chung Lai-ling, Privacy Commissioner in Hong Kong recently addressed an alarming spike in hacking incidents and data leaks, calling upon all businesses to strengthen their data security measures by reviewing data collection/retention policies as well as creating breach notification procedures.

Another area for improvement involves raising business awareness of their obligations under the Personal Data (Protection) Ordinance (PDPO), particularly when working with overseas processors. According to this law, data users will be held liable if an agent or contractor fail to abide by its requirements, even if processing takes place outside Hong Kong. HK’s government is currently exploring options to broadening definition of personal data in order to include additional activities not currently covered under existing legislation.
