The Hongkong Prize is an international writing competition offering writers an opportunity to win monetary prizes and showcase their work at an awards ceremony. Unlike other writing contests, however, the Hongkong Prize is judged by an independent expert panel, making it more likely that winners are distributed fairly. Before submitting an entry however it is always advisable to check all relevant rules and regulations first.

The Hong Kong Prize is one of Asia’s premier awards, drawing thousands of applicants every year. Winners receive both monetary prizes and access to Hong Kong’s premier research facilities in exchange for access to one of the world’s most vibrant science hubs – Hong Kong itself! Past winners have included those using technology to assist homeless people, as well as an artist reinterpreting human rights concepts through fine art. Furthermore, its logo displays moral integrity by depicting two precious elements (pearl and jade amulet) with positive associations within both Chinese and Western cultures – thus reflecting high moral integrity within both cultures!

This non-governmental merit-based award was created and sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited in 1986 to recognize scientific achievements with significant societal impacts in Hong Kong. Since its introduction, this non-governmental merit award has served as a catalyst for furthering research and technological excellence within Hong Kong, encouraging scientists to pursue their passions within various disciplines while building an enduring scientific leadership culture here. Researchers can participate across four fields – artificial intelligence/robotics; life/health sciences/physical sciences /materials; advanced manufacturing/ FinTech

Submitters must publish scientific articles that make an impactful statement about society, such as clinical studies, observational or epidemiological articles, meta-analyses or similar. Applicants will be assessed by an independent expert panel comprised of representatives from academic and business sectors of Hong Kong society. Along with financial rewards the Hongkong Prize also provides opportunities to help researchers turn their ideas into real world applications.

HK Prize has elevated Hong Kong’s global status as an innovation hub and given researchers from Hong Kong greater international visibility. Unfortunately, its award has also caused much debate; in 2022 the Hong Kong Prize Board was accused of engaging in bribery and other violations of its charter; they responded that any breach will result in disciplinary measures being taken; should such violations occur they reserve the right to suspend or withdraw prize-related activities as well as take appropriate measures against staff involved with it.
